QUOTE FROM THE HOMESTEAD

"Nature teaches us what schedules try to silence."

Wendell Berry

HOMESTEAD TIP OF THE DAY

A broody hen wants to hatch eggs, but if you don’t want chicks, she’ll need to be “broken.” First, move her from the nest multiple times a day. For persistent broodies, place her in a wire-bottom cage in a shady area with airflow for a few days (this cools her underside). If you do want chicks, provide her with a quiet, predator-proof area and mark the hatching eggs clearly to avoid collecting them.

ALL THINGS HOMESTEAD

A Quick Start to Freezing Like a Pro 🧊

Tired of freezer-burned veggies or mystery bags at the back of the freezer? Most homesteaders have faced the pain of wasted food and poor freezing habits… but that ends today.

Here’s a quick peek into our Ultimate Freezing Guide (available as a free PDF!).

Why Freezing Matters

  • Saves time and money – Prep food ahead, buy in bulk, and cut waste.

  • Preserves freshness – Lock in nutrients by freezing produce at its peak.

  • Prevents spoilage – Say goodbye to slimy spinach or mushy zucchini.

Must-Have Freezing Tools

  • Sheet pans for flash freezing

  • Freezer-safe bags or containers

  • A permanent marker (label everything!)

  • Ice for cooling blanched veggies

Freezing Basics (Preview)

  • Blanch before freezing – This keeps color and texture intact.

  • Cool in ice water – Stops cooking fast.

  • Dry well – Moisture causes freezer burn.

  • Flash freeze – Freeze flat before storing.

  • Label everything – Add the date, too!

This is just a snippet.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

The “Let Them” Theory 💚

In a world where everyone seems to have an opinion and everything demands your energy, the Let Them Theory offers something rare: peace.

For homesteaders and homemakers who carry the mental load of tending land, feeding families, and holding things together, it’s a breath of fresh air. Let’s walk through this mindset shift in five simple parts:

1. Let them do what they want… because you can’t control others.

When people say one thing and do another, or when your grown child chooses a path you wouldn’t, here’s a reminder: let them.

Trying to control people drains the energy you need for what truly matters. You can raise chickens and nurture kids, but you can’t force either to behave on cue every time. And that’s okay.

2. Let them talk, while you focus on yourself.

If neighbors gossip about your pantry stash or your choice to homeschool, let them. Their opinion won’t change your purpose.

Homesteaders know the value of tending their own soil. The same goes for your emotional soil. Pour your energy into your own growth, your own home, your own wellness. Because that’s where your influence really counts.

3. Let relationships breathe. Stop forcing connection.

If someone drifts away, let them. Real connection never comes from chasing, fixing, or begging. It comes from being present, being real, and allowing others the space to meet you halfway.

Whether it’s a friend who’s stopped calling or a sister who doesn’t understand your slow-living lifestyle, let that distance settle. You may find the relationship grows stronger without the tug-of-war.

4. Let go of comparison and judgment. They hold you back.

Scrolling Instagram and seeing a spotless farmhouse kitchen? Or someone else’s kids in matching clothes while yours have jam on their sleeves? Let them.

Comparison is a thief. It makes you miss your blessings. And judgment? It keeps your heart small. Other people’s choices aren’t your business. Release it and watch your days feel lighter.

5. Let endings be what they are… new beginnings.

A project fails. A friendship ends. A dream shifts. It stings. But if something leaves, let it. Endings clear space.

Just like clearing a dead tomato plant makes room for spring seedlings, letting go of what’s over creates room for what’s next. If it’s your first time planting garlic or your last time trying to fix what’s broken, trust the new season coming.

The Bottom Line

As women who build homes, grow gardens, and pour ourselves into others daily, we deserve the calm that comes with letting go. This is your permission to stop holding on so tight.

So the next time someone surprises you, disappoints you, or drifts from you? Take a breath... and let them.

You’ve got chickens to feed, herbs to hang, and a heart worth protecting. Let the rest go. ❤️
